BACKGROUND:

 

During any given calendar year, the number of street closures approved by the City Council within the Central Business District (CBD) zoning district shall not exceed twenty-four (24) days. Any street closure lasting in excess of four (4) hours shall be counted as one full day, while any street closure of four (4) hours or less shall be counted as one half day per the Special Events Ordinance No. 04-2018.

 

Events:

 

Run for Responders 5K, Saturday, January 6, 2024 (3:00pm-10:00pm)

Harrison St.:               between Brevard Ave. and Riveredge Blvd.

Brevard Ave.:             between Oak St. and Harrison St.

Oak St.:                      between Riverside Dr. and Brevard Ave.

Derby St.:                     at Riverside Drive and Brevard Ave.

Riverside Dr.:              between Oak St. and Church St.

Church St.:                  between Riverside Dr. and east terminus of Church St. The participants will head east towards the Riverfront Park Boardwalk towards the finish line.

 

The race route will open immediately after all the participants have all crossed the finish line. Harrison Street will reopen at Delannoy and Riveredge at 10pm.

Total Closure - One Day

 

Martin Luther King Jr. Peace March and Service, Monday, January 15, 2024 (11:00am-4:00pm).

Provost Park on Varr Ave. to SR 520 going east to Riveredge Blvd. into Riverfront Park. This event does not require a street closure. However, the Peace March does include the streets of Cocoa including the SR520. The organizers are required to have the proper DOT permitting in place to hold the march.

Total Closure - This event does not require a street closure.

This is a CBD gated event. Foot traffic will stop at 3pm and gates will close at 4:30pm.

Space Coast Triathlon, Sunday, March 24th, 2024 (2:00am-12:00pm)

A rolling street closure will be utilized for the Cocoa Triathlon. The number of participants and their safety requires a street closure request. This event will not require temporary traffic control devices (TTCD) to block roads throughout the course route. The streets in which the TTCD will be utilized are:

 

Harrison St.:                                           between Delannoy Ave and Riveredge Blvd.

Riveredge Blvd.:                      between King St. (HWY 520) to Lee Wenner Park.

 

The Transition Area for each segment will be located in Riverfront Park/Harrison Field.

Swim segment: Will commence in Lee Wenner Park with a Spring Distance of .25miles, into the Indian River. The turnaround point will be designated at the floating bouy.

The Bicycling Segment: Sprint Distance equal to one lap, will begin in Riverfront Park. The participants will then proceed to the 520 and continue North on Indian River Drive with the turnaround at Indian Trail and back to the transition area in Riverfront Park.

The Run Segment: Sprint Distance equal to one lap, will transition in Riverfront Park then proceed south towards the turnaround point at Barton Avenue and commence north back to the finish in Riverfront Park.

Space Coast Free Wheelers Waterway Century Ride- Sunday, October 27th, 2024 

(5:00am-8:30am)

The corner of Delannoy Ave. and Harrison St. from 7:00 am-8:30 am for the beginning of their bike racing event for charity.  This is an annual event that has occurred the last weekend in October each year.  As soon as the race begins and bikes are cleared out, the street will be opened back up.  Actual time should be no longer than 30 minutes.

Running Zone Foundation and Space Coast Runners Annual Space Coast Marathon and Half Marathon, Sunday, December 1st 2024 (2:00am-2:00pm).

Space Coast Marathon Course 26.2 Miles

The Race begins on Brevard Avenue heading south. Turn right on Orange St. Turn right on Florida Ave. Turn right on RT.520 (east bound) Turn left on Brevard Ave heading north and cross over Rt.520 (west bound). Continue northbound on Indian River Drive with a turn-around just south of Indian Trail. Head south on Indian River Drive. Turn right on Peachtree St. Turn left on Florida Ave. Turn left on Rosa L. Jones Blvd. Heading right onto Oak St. Turn right onto Rockledge Drive to the turnaround just south of Stonebridge Drive. Turn around heading north on Rockledge Drive. Turn right on Church St. utilizing the Porcher House Loop Alleyway behind St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and Academy. Turn right onto Delannoy Ave. Right onto Harrison St. Remaining in the west bound lane of Harrison St. into Lee Wenner Park to the Finish Line.

Space Coast Half- Marathon Course 13.1 Miles (two courses)

North Course

Heading South on Brevard Ave. Turn Right onto Orange St. Turn right onto Florida Ave. Turn Right onto RT 520 (east-bound). Turn Left on Brevard Ave Crossing RT 520 (west bound). Course runs along Riverside Drive until just south of Indian Trail. The course then turns around heading south until RT 520 (west-bound) and turns left to the new connector crossing under Rt 520 into Lee Wenner Park to the Finish Line.

South Course

Heading South on Brevard Ave. Turning left on Church Street. Turn right on Rockledge Drive continuing on Rockledge Drive to 200 meters south of Stonebridge Dr. (just north of Oakledge Drive. Turn around heading north back to Church St. Turning right onto Church Street using the Porcher House Loop Alleyway behind St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and Academy. Turn right onto Delannoy Ave. Turn right onto Harrison St. Staying in the west-bound lane of Harrison Street into Lee Wenner Park to the Finish Line.

HCVMS Holiday Craft Fair, Saturday and Sunday, December 7th -8th 2024 (2:00am December 7th, 6:00 pm December 8th).

STRATEGIC PLAN CONNECTION: 

 

The Approval of the road closures will help to enhance the image of Cocoa as an inviting destination for visitors as well as re-enforce a sense of community and increased event participation for its citizens

 

BUDGETARY IMPACT:

 

The City receives $50.00 for each group that requests a street closure.  The MLK event will have the permit fees waived. The event is held on a federal holiday per the special events ordinance section 2-404

 

 

 

PREVIOUS ACTION:

 

The 2023 Road Closure requests were approved last year.
