BACKGROUND:

In the February/March time period, Fleet manager Tony Jones was approached by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) with an offer of a Canine rear kennel which came out of a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) vehicle (approximate 2020-2021 model vehicle) that was surplused due to a vehicle accident.

The Kennel was inspected by Fleet Staff and removed from the vehicle.  The right-side interior door panel and window bar was damaged; however, Cocoa Fleet had a right-side door panel and window bar stored at the Water Field Operations (WFO) Central Warehouse from a prisoner transport system.  The rubber flooring was torn, however, Fleet stocks the rubber flooring for our current canine kennels as the canines damage the floors from time to time.

Fleet often recycles components from surplused or damaged vehicles and equipment as a cost saving measure or as a simple way to ensure that parts are made available as needed.  Other Municipal Fleets often use the same types of vehicles and equipment so many times it just takes a phone call of an email to see if necessary parts are available.

In this case, this type of equipment generally goes in the trash and/or is used scrap metal.  By donating it to the City of Cocoa and by our obtaining this equipment the City of Cocoa saved the cost of a new Canine Kennel at approximately $3,150.  The Police Department plans on utilizing this along with a previously donated item in order to convert a vehicle into a canine vehicle.
