body

BACKGROUND:

Brevard Schools Foundation, Inc, submitted a donation application on March 5, 2024 to provide a literacy and theater opportunity for 3rd grade students from four local elementary schools. The application is for a request to assist in providing each 3rd grade student with the book “Miss Nelson is Missing” after their attendance of the Cocoa High School Drama production of the play “Miss Nelson is Missing” on April 12. Books are to be purchased from a bulk bookstore at a reduced price of $5.19 each, for a grand total of $1,427.25.

The following number of students will attend the play performance:

Cambridge - 62

Saturn - 83

Emma Jewel - 44

Fair Glen - 77 (Port St. John)

Additionally, per the City’s Donation Application Policy, an organization is only eligible for funding once per fiscal year. Brevard School Foundation was granted a donation back in October, 2023.  Therefore, they would not be eligible under the donation policy again until next fiscal year.

If Council so chooses, the City of Cocoa has budgeted $2,000 for Cocoa Schools Donations under Council’s Promotional account, from which they could donate the money from. If Council chooses this route, it would be recommended by staff to change the recommended motion to make the donation paid directly to Cocoa High School.

The total request is for $1,427.25. Council can decide in the form of a motion of how much they would like to support this program.
