body

BACKGROUND:

Staff is requesting approval to apply for the Community-Built Playspace Grant through KABOOM!, which will fund the planning and installation of handicap-accessible playground equipment at Provost Park.  The grant will fund the planning and installation of the equipment, and KABOOM!’s staff will work with the city closely, providing services as needed during the process.

This will be a community-driven project that will incorporate the community as part of the project from the design, through the planning and building stages. The city will be required to form a committee of community members who will collectively work with the city and KABOOM! to plan the project. The city will also need to provide volunteers that can help prepare the site for equipment installation.

The City will work with the committee to fundraise the financial contribution portion of the grant which ranges from $3,500-$8,500.

STRATEGIC PLAN CONNECTION:

Investment in Public Infrastructure: Support a safe, accessible, well-maintained network of parks, facilities and greenspace.

BUDGETARY IMPACT:

The City of Cocoa will allocate $8,500 towards the grant match for this project but will try to get that match portion through fundraising efforts.

PREVIOUS ACTION:

In September 2014, the City of Cocoa received a KABOOM! grant to rebuild the Taylor Park playground in Cocoa Village.
