BACKGROUND:
On January 9, 2019, City Council awarded the design-build construction of the Dr. Joe Lee Smith Community Center to W&J Construction. During the course of construction, minor alterations were made to the basketball court layout due to the addition of side courts. After the additions were made the court lines had to be re-applied resulting in a very close distance between the bleachers (handicap area) and the out of bounds line. In order to maintain safety of the spectators a new set of bleachers need to be purchased.
Staff determined that the bleachers that were intended for use at the new Dr. Joe Lee Smith Community Center could be repurposed to Travis Park. This agenda item is necessary to move funding for the purchase and relocation of bleachers from the Dr. Joe Lee Smith Community Center Capital Projects Fund to the General Fund. More suitable bleachers for the Dr. Joe Lee Smith Community Center will be purchased through use of contingency budget for the project. This will allow for more suitable bleachers at the Dr. Joe Lee Smith Community Center and allow the existing bleachers to be relocated to the Travis Park Community Center in District 4. Travis Park Community Center currently has an indoor basketball court but no bleachers. The addition of bleachers at the Travis Park Community Center will help to enhance this basketball court.
