BACKGROUND:

Aurora Street, from State Road 520 to Jackson Street is a local roadway with no pedestrian facilities and utilizes open ditch stormwater conveyance on both sides of the roadway. This particular corridor has frequent pedestrian traffic that is forced onto the roadway to access the Central Brevard Sharing Center site, which is within this project’s location. The Space Coast Area Transit Hub and Provost Park are also within one block of this project and contribute to the pedestrian traffic in this location.  The lack of sidewalk connectivity creates an unsafe pedestrian environment and the piping of the ditch is necessary to construct ADA compliant sidewalks along the roadway.

The Aurora Street Sidewalk Improvements Project includes the installation of new sidewalks on both sides of Aurora Street from SR 520 to Jackson Street. Stormwater improvements, including stormwater inlets, piping, and other stormwater structures to replace the existing roadside ditches and driveway culverts are required to provide adequate space for the new sidewalks.

The City requested the professional services of Infrastructure Solution Services (ISS) to assist with this project. The Scope of Work is to provide the Engineering Services for the engineering design and permitting of the sidewalk and drainage improvements along this roadway.

A portion of this project design will be funded through the use of Transportation Impact Fee dollars by way of the Brevard County Transportation Impact Fee Trust Fund. The Transportation Impact Fee Committee determined this project is eligible for use of these funds since it is providing a new mode of transportation. The City anticipates the construction to be funded by a future FDOT Local Agency Program project through the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization (SCTPO). This project has been prioritized by the SCTPO Bicycle Pedestrian Trails Advisory Committee and is anticipated to be programed for construction in Fiscal Year 2023.
