BACKGROUND:
Article III of the Cocoa City Charter states the following:
• Section 6. - Deputy Mayor; Senior Member of Council.
(a) The city council, annually, at the organizational meeting held on the eighth day after the date of the general election, or at the second regular meeting held in November if there is no municipal general election, shall elect from among its members, a deputy mayor. In the absence, incapacitation, or disqualification of the mayor, or upon the mayor's refusal to act as directed by the city council, the deputy mayor shall perform the duties of the mayor.
Due to the change in laws regarding the Supervisor of Elections time frame in certifying the results of the election, and the way in which Regular City Council meetings fall during the month of November, there will be a Special City Council Meeting where this appointment will take place and the swearing in of new Council members will happen.

Elections for Deputy Mayor have been held annually in accordance with the City Charter. The Deputy Mayor election for 2019 was held at the Regular City Council meeting of November 13, 2020.
