body

BACKGROUND:

City Staff will be presenting on the City of Cocoa’s 6th Annual 2021 Cocoa Works Summer Youth Program.  The program was not held during the 2020 year due to COVID-19.  The City has partnered with CareerSource Brevard again to provide a paid summer internship to high school students from Cocoa and/or Rockledge High.  This is a needs-based program eligible only for high school students who reside within the City of Cocoa city limits.  Each student that completed the program in its entirety will be presented a certificate of completion.

STRATEGIC PLAN CONNECTION:

Providing Cocoa youth a meaningful employment opportunity during the summer that also provides a program to develop their employability skills is in an investment in the future and addresses systemic issues of poverty and unemployment.  Recruiting from local Cocoa residents will assist in the strategic item of community development to help young disadvantaged citizens receive an opportunity to gain experience in a public servant position.  Although these positions are temporary summer positions, it may provide a career path for regular full-time positions upon the student’s graduation from High School.
